Living in Fort Myers comes with significant cost considerations. Multiple reviews cite high and rising prices for rentals, with users noting that even substandard accommodations can cost as much as $750 per month. The rental market is unstable and changes frequently, which adds to the difficulty of securing a long-term place. There was also a serious safety incident involving a neighbor, which raised concerns about the quality of some residential areas.
The city has a seasonal population fluctuation due to incoming retirees, known as 'Snow Birds', which directly impacts rental availability and overall cost of living, especially from November to May. While the cost of living can be manageable under $3,000/month for long-term residents, short-term renters may struggle to find affordable options. In many cases, Airbnb listings are overpriced spare rooms.
Hurricane Ian has also had long-lasting effects, having destroyed many of the city's beaches. Users recommended considering nearby towns such as Cape Coral, Lehigh Acres, and Bonita Springs, which are close to Fort Myers and may offer better rental opportunities. Overall, Fort Myers may not be suitable for everyone, particularly short-term renters or those on a tight budget.

Lived there from 2015 till 2023, the COL goes up every year. The rental market is in constant Flux, changing every 3 days. It is a retirement community/city with a population that spikes from Nov till end of may with "Snow Birds", Retires that live part of the year there. Hurricane Ian destroyed most of the well known beaches. If your smart and are staying long term (6 months plus)You can have a COL under $3,000/month at the time of writing this.
A great deal or Airbnb, are currently spare bedrooms for the same price of a 1 bedroom Apartment. Consider staying in other towns around Fort myers. Ie. Cape Coral, North Fort Myers, Lehigh Acres, Estero, Bonita Springs. All are relatively close to RSW.

Way too expensive. I was looking for a place to rent for 4 months! I finally found a crap hole--- a room and a bathroom for 750 a month. I lasted less than a week there because the so-called neighbor who shared the building with me tried to kick my door in because she didnt like where I parked. I had to involve the police and the landlord. The landlord gave me my money back and that wacko got fired from their job, but it was disgusting. Not a good place to live anymore.

Ive lived here for about 7 years and the worst thing about this place is the monotony of the roads. Aside from downtown and the occasional landmark, everything looks the same. so if you want to visit or god forbid live here, You'd better have good map skills or google maps on at all times. Also the air could probably smother you.
