Mauritius is a strong choice for digital nomads, especially for those seeking a year-long stay under the country’s Premium Visa program. The North and West coasts are preferred locations, offering solid infrastructure, reliable internet, and proximity to coworking spaces and beautiful beaches. Areas like Trou aux Biches and Flic en Flac provide ideal conditions to balance work and leisure, with short walks to the ocean and plenty of local amenities.
Locals are widely regarded as friendly and hospitable. The island culture is diverse, with visible signs of religious coexistence and a peaceful society. Outdoor lovers will appreciate the variety of hikes available, including the popular Le Morne, as well as a wide range of water sports, especially kitesurfing due to reliable wind in the South.
However, not all parts of the island offer the same experience. Port Louis is often cited as underwhelming, and there are concerns about tourist-targeted pricing and general cleanliness in some areas. Alcohol and cigarettes are pricey, and some visitors note conservative social attitudes, particularly regarding LGBTQ+ issues.
Overall, Mauritius offers a fantastic work-travel balance, especially when supported by local agencies who can help with housing, visas, and insurance arrangements.

Mauritius is indeed a great place to live in as a Digital Nomad ! They have recently released the Premium Visa for digital nomads that allows to live on the island for at least 1 year (renewable). Best places to live in are the North (very well developed with all facilities and business centres) and the West of the island (more for those who prefer to surf the waves and hike the mountains in between 2 video calls !).
The Mauritians are very welcoming and smiling people. I am not the first one to be touched deeply by their generosity. Food is very nice, people are helping, music and culture are the best. Wind in the South is perfect for kite surfing, wind foil, windsurf, etc
There are also new coworking spaces opening all around the island and you can hop from The Hive coworking spaces to a nice South African café such as Bloom in the North or to a tea place/colonial house such as Les Aubineaux in the centre of the island. All with nice wifi and great vibes.
My personal recommendations : visit the tea factory of Bois Cheri, taste the Vanilla Rum of Saint-Aubin, hop in the beautiful lagoon of Pointe d'Esny, and hike Le Morne at sunrise. I cherish every single one of these visits.
I would also recommend to be accompanied by an agency to get your visa, find a trusted real estate agency, choose your local insurance, etc. I asked Smart Traveller, they are specialised in helping digital nomads come settle in Mauritius and they were the best. Young and friendly team, professional and human. Cannot recommend them enough actually.
Still a great adventure to be here in Mauritius working remotely and a dream come true for my family and I.

Hi, I would recommend to not spend too much time in Port Louis if you are in Mauritius. It is a less interesting place in Mauritius to stay or spend time. I would recommend either the North or the west coast of the Island. Trou aux Biches or Flic en Flac are two really good options. You will be at most 5 mins walk away from a postal card beach while still having very good working conditions (good wifi). What I love about Mauritius is the variety of things to do, even though it is quite a small Island, you have numerous amazing hikes (I would clearly recommend Le Morne Hike), lots of postal cards beaches, natural parks, all type of sea activities from submarine tube to perfect kiting conditions. Also, one thing I can't really agree is the racial tolerance score that Nomad List gave them because it is quite ironic in a country where 25% of people are Christians, 40% are Hindus and 15% are Muslims that there is no racial tolerance. Mauritius is one of the most peaceful countries I had the chance to visit where the mix of culture is the most unique. You can literally find a Church, a Mosque and a Temple 30 meters away from each other. It is also one of the most politically stable and the 2nd most developed country of Africa so they have that mix of modernity and Island vibes. If you are a digital nomad going to Mauritius, I would clearly recommend you to contact Island trotter (it is a kind of digital nomad consultant based there) and they will organize everything for you so that you get the best experience. Gael and Jean have been very very helpful during my visit there and they made my trip amazing.

Be careful of the many tourist traps. Restaurants have two menus, one for the locals and one for the tourists. Booze and cigarettes are very expensive and people are generally quite homophobic. The place is quite dirty with building rubble and half built homes all over the place. Lots of wonderful public beaches and the south has beautiful stretches with untouched flora.
